The idea came from the fact that US markets toss out 15 billion dollars worth of fruits and vegetables each year just because they are bruised or discolored. But they are still fresh and edible. I felt there was an opportunity to stop the waste, so Ugly Fruit was born. Ugly Fruit is a stand that makes juice, jams, and dried fruits out of unattractive produce donated from our neighborhood grocery stores. Ugly fruit, pretty yummy!

As I fled Sandy Hook Elementary on the morning of December 14, 2012, clutching two of my student’s hands tightly, I thought, “thank you, thank you.” From that moment on I realized it is not the moment that defines you, it is how you react to the moment that defines you.

As I reflected in the days following, I knew we had to make a choice for ourselves, our students, our nation, and our world. If we were going to choose love, kindness, compassion, empathy, and hope after such terror and destruction, then we needed to teach this to our students. But at this point, I still had a large question to answer. How?

Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes

For 75 years, Finland’s expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It’s like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.

It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it’s designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they’re from, an equal start in life.

The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.

It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.

With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby’s first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box’s four cardboard walls.

Mothers have a choice between taking the box, or a cash grant, currently set at 140 euros, but 95% opt for the box as it’s worth much more.

The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.

Some late-night hunger pains can only be appeased by one thing: instant ramen. But as all ramen aficionados know, it’s not only the noodles and mysterious spice packets that count—the packaging itself forms much of the experience. A good meal-in-a-bowl should have a worthy bowl to go along with it.

Designers Anna Glansén and Hanna Billqvist of Tomorrow Machine designed a clean, eco-friendly version that they’ve dubbed the “sustainable expanding bowl.” It’s made from 100% bio-based and biodegradable material, and it hardens into an eating vessel for soups, noodles, and pretty much anything with a “just add water” label on it.

What have we always said is the most important thing? Breakfast.

Take a look at this wonderful recipe for the Skip’s Scramblethat my tumblr buddy Brian made. It includes “I just blue myself” berry waffles, “banana stand” pancakes, bangers in the mouth, model home fries, and many other delicious things.

Now I know what I’m making to celebrate the return of Arrested Development.
